UMOJA, THE VILLAGE WHERE MEN ARE FORBIDDENThe Samburu community |
Summary Specifications |
From 1970 to 2003, hundreds of Samburu women claim they have been raped by British soldiers in the north of Kenya. Accused of bringing shame on their communities, they have been beaten and repudiated by their husbands and banned from their villages. A handle of them gathered and created Umoja, a village where men are forbidden which quickly became a refuge for Samburu women. The success of Umoja pokes the jealousy of men who attack the village regularly and cause many problems with its founder, Rebecca Lolosoli.
